Course Description

Boards and risk committees now face exposure that traditional risk registers were not built to capture. Generative AI adoption, geopolitical realignment, climate driven supply disruption, and rapid regulatory change generate risks that arrive as weak, ambiguous signals rather than quantifiable probabilities. ISO/TS 31050, published as a technical specification extending ISO 31000, gives organizations structured guidance for identifying and treating this category of risk before it escalates into loss, and 2026 regulatory pressure on resilience disclosure and governance accountability is pushing risk functions to demonstrate that structure rather than assert it.

Participants work through the ISO/TS 31050 process during training: establishing scope, context, and criteria specific to emerging risks, then applying identification techniques suited to weak signals rather than historical loss data. Exercises walk through assessing risks characterized by high uncertainty, variable velocity, and interconnected impact, and participants select treatment options that account for that uncertainty instead of forcing emerging risks into a standard risk matrix. The training builds the risk intelligence cycle step by step, from gathering external signals through translating them into decisions leadership can act on before a risk becomes a crisis.

The course addresses gaps most risk training leaves unresolved: who owns an emerging risk when no single function has full visibility, how to set monitoring indicators for a risk with no historical baseline, and how to communicate risk intelligence to a board that expects certainty a genuinely emerging risk cannot provide. Participants also work through the accountability ambiguity that stalls emerging risk programs, where identification happens but no process converts a weak signal into a resourced response.

Participants leave able to identify emerging risks and their sources of uncertainty, apply ISO/TS 31050 guidance within the ISO 31000 risk management process, and run a risk intelligence cycle that supports timely, informed decisions. They sit the two hour PECB ISO/TS 31050 Emerging Risks Manager exam covering three competency domains, receive more than 300 pages of training materials, and qualify for a free retake within 12 months if the first attempt does not succeed.

    • Recognize emerging risks and their sources of uncertainty
    • Apply ISO/TS 31050 guidance within the ISO 31000 process
    • Assess emerging risks for velocity, uncertainty, and impact
    • Select and justify treatment options for evolving risks
    • Monitor and report on emerging risks using defined indicators
    • Build organizational resilience capability against emerging risk exposure
    • Run the risk intelligence cycle to support timely decisions
    • Risk manager who tracks known risks on a standard register but has no defined method for signals that do not yet fit a category; this course gives them a structured process for identifying and treating emerging risk before it escalates.
    • Resilience or business continuity lead who builds response plans around historical incidents but lacks indicators for risks with no precedent; this course teaches resilience capability development and indicator design for genuinely new exposure.
    • Governance or compliance professional who must report risk exposure to a board that expects quantified answers on inherently uncertain risks; this course builds the risk intelligence method to communicate that uncertainty credibly.
    • Consultant or advisor supporting client organizations through strategic uncertainty who needs a recognized method beyond generic scenario planning; this course provides the ISO/TS 31050 framework as a defensible, standards based approach.
  • Participants benefit from working familiarity with the ISO 31000 risk management process and existing experience in a risk, resilience, governance, or compliance role. Without this baseline, the ISO/TS 31050 modules on integrating emerging risk into an existing risk management framework move quickly, and participants without prior risk management exposure may follow the concepts but struggle to apply the risk intelligence cycle to their own organization's context.
  • Training course objectives and structure
  • Introduction to ISO/TS 31050 and other standards for risk management
  • Fundamental concepts of emerging risks
  • Managing emerging risks to enhance resilience
  • Risk management principles and process for emerging risks
  • Communication and consultation
  • Scope, context, and criteria for emerging risks
  • Risk assessment
  • Risk treatment, monitoring, review, and recording and reporting
  • Capability development and resilience indicators
  • Risk intelligence cycle for emerging risks
