Publication does not cancel a current certificate. It stays valid on its existing terms while you prepare, and surveillance and recertification audits continue as normal.
The practical deadline arrives earlier than the formal one. Certification bodies need accreditation for the new edition before they can run transition audits, and demand will concentrate in the final year. Combining the transition with a surveillance or recertification audit you already have planned is usually the cleanest route, with at least six months left for corrective action.
Work backwards from that audit date, leaving time for a gap analysis against the 2026 text, updates to context, aspects and change procedures, an internal audit and a management review. Confirm the exact arrangements with your certification body. The clause-level changes show where most of the work sits.
