Course Description

Organizations under pressure to demonstrate structured innovation, rather than ad hoc R&D spending, are turning to ISO 56001 as the reference framework for an innovation management system (IMS). Since its publication, certification bodies and internal audit functions have needed auditors who can assess IMS conformity with the same rigor applied to quality or information security systems, particularly as boards demand evidence that innovation investment translates into governed, auditable outcomes rather than isolated pilot projects. This shift puts pressure on organizations that have run innovation informally for years and now must produce documented evidence an external auditor can test.

During the five-day training, participants work through the ISO 56001 clause structure via case studies drawn from cross-functional innovation programs involving R&D, product, and external partners. Exercises require drafting audit plans, conducting mock interviews with process owners, sampling objective evidence, and drafting nonconformity reports that hold up under review. Role-play sessions on day three simulate on-site audit activities, including opening and closing meetings and managing disagreement with auditees over evidence sufficiency, then day four exercises focus on closing an audit and presenting findings to a mock certification committee.

The training addresses gaps that generic auditor courses skip: how to test whether an IMS's innovation intake and portfolio decisions are documented with enough traceability to survive a certification audit, how to assign accountability when innovation activities span multiple business units and external suppliers, and how to evaluate evidence quality when much of an IMS's output is qualitative rather than measurable. Participants also practice communicating findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders, a recurring failure point in innovation audits where R&D teams resist standard audit language and treat audit requests as a threat to creative autonomy rather than a governance requirement.

Participants leave able to plan, conduct, and close an ISO 56001 audit in line with ISO 19011 and ISO/IEC 17021-1, manage an audit program across multiple sites or business units, and defend audit conclusions to certification committees and client management. Passing the day five exam qualifies candidates to apply for the PECB Certified ISO 56001 Lead Auditor credential and, with sufficient audit experience, progress toward Auditor, Lead Auditor, or Senior Lead Auditor status.

    • Explain the fundamental concepts and principles of an IMS based on ISO 56001
    • Interpret ISO 56001 requirements from an auditor's perspective
    • Evaluate IMS conformity to ISO 56001 requirements using fundamental audit principles
    • Plan, conduct, and close an ISO 56001 compliance audit per ISO/IEC 17021-1 and ISO 19011
    • Manage an ISO 56001 audit program across sites and teams
    • Draft audit findings and nonconformity reports backed by objective evidence
    • Communicate audit results to clients and interested parties

Professional Testimonials

Had a great experience learning with Abilene Academy, it has been an extremely long time since I have attended an external formal training outside of the business organization I work in. I found this training to be truly beneficial for me to attend. the overall delivery of the course by Henri was superb, he kept us well engage despite having half of the room online and half face to face. The communication from the advisors from the initial enquiry regrading the course up until now has also been great! definitely recommending to my colleagues. Thank you!
